Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My sister Lou's cerebral palsy was detected in 1983 and a name put to her autism far later. The doctor who diagnosed her told our parents to focus their love on her twin, Sarah, and on their eldest daughter, me. He advised them to put Lou in an institution and forget about her.

If only that doctor could see Lou now. She'll be life and soul of the party at my 40th celebration, chatting to everyone and dancing the night away - if she gets half the chance.

Her zest for life stems in no small part from the brilliant support she receives from Autism Together, the charity where she enjoys activities such as music, art, working in their cafe and trampolining. Prior to joining Autism Together, Lou went somewhere where her basic needs weren't met and her health and happiness suffered. Autism Together transformed her life - possibly even saved it since the previous service had refused against the advice of her doctor to administer emergency medication if she had a dangerous seizure.

As a family, we are profoundly grateful to Autism Together for daily helping Lou to defy limiting expectations.
