Granny & Granddad were diagnosed with Vascular Dementia at the same time in 2009 and sadly passed away a couple of years later. It is estimated that this strand of dementia affects around 150,000 people in the UK so it's pretty rare for a married couple to be diagnosed with this condition at the same time. Like other forms of dementia Vascular Dementia gets worse over time, so sadly my family had to watch two dearly loved grandparents slip away in front of us over the course of a few years. It was a tough time but we're extremely lucky that they were so well looked after. They shared a room in their care home surrounded by their treasured belongings and in close proximity to our family until the day my Granddad passed away. And most importantly...they were still very much in love. So many others who are affected by this disease aren't as fortunate as us which is why I have chosen Alzheimer's Society as my charity for the London Marathon. Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice. I'm not going to lie, the marathon is going to be a massive challenge but I'm hoping your donations will get me past the finish line.
