Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are off to trek to Everest Base Camp in aid of Rainbow Trust, this charity is close to our heart for the amazing work they do for terminally ill children and their families. As a parent your worst imaginable nightmare would be to lose your child and to watch them suffer. Rainbow trust provides a variety of support bespoke to every family that needs their help.

Today there are an estimated 49,000 children and young people in the UK living with a life limiting or life threatening condition who may require palliative care. Many of these children and their families are able to cope or are not in a ‘crisis situation’. However, thousands of families have to face the very real possibility that their child may die and struggle to cope on a day to day basis.

Their Family Support Workers provide a life line to these families and children and support the whole family including parents, carers, the unwell child, brothers, sisters and grandparents. They bring support and help to families who so desperately need it at home, in hospital and in the community. Any family can receive support from the moment of their child's diagnosis.

We aim to raise £1000 which is enough money to pay for a support worker for one week.

We are aiming to complete the trek in 12 days unassisted.

1, November 2017: our trek commences we will be flying from Kathmandu to Lukla (the most dangerous landing strip in the world) starting our climb at 9,350ft high and trekking to Phakding for our first night.

2, November 2017: Trek to Namche Bazaar which is 11,285 ft high. Today we will have our first full day on the trail as we trek north up the Dudh Koshi river valley. We will cross a high suspension bridge and then make a challenging climb through dense forest to arrive at Namche Bazaar.

3, November 2017: Today will be an acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar, additionally, we have a hike planned to explore and assist in acclimatisation.

4, November 2017: Trek to Tengboche which is 12,850 feet high. We continue the trek to base camp today with a climb out of Namche and then the trail drops down to cross the DudhKoshi River and then makes a rigorous ascent through pine forests to the monastery of Tengboche in a meadow with surrounding lodges.

5, November 2017: Trek to Dingboche at 14,290 feet. We will make our way down from the meadow and through some serene landscape of dense forests. We cross the river as we continue to Pangboche. The terrain becomes more arid and barren as we rise above the plant life.

6, November 2017: Rest Day to acclimatize at Dingboche at 14,290 feet high. Taking another rest day in Dingboche before setting off for Lobuche the next day will help acclimatize to the high altitude. Instead of remaining idle, we will stay active and have our acclimatization walk and climb up the ridge above Dingbouche to take in the spectacular panoramic close up view of the snow capped Himalayan Peaks and charming Dingboche village.

7, November 2017: Trek to Lobuche which is 16,175 feet high. Today our trek will be filled with great mountain views nearly the whole trek.

8, November 2017: Trek to Everest Base Camp at 17,600 feet and back to GorakShep which is 17,010 feet. Today will be a long awaited and rewarding day. From Lobuche, we will follow the glacial moraine up to the lodges of Gorak Shep our overnight point for today, but we will then continue on to reach the ultimate destination of this trek and we are as close as possible to the world’s highest peak without being a climber.

9, November 2017: Hike to Kala Patthar viewpoint at 18,208 feet and then Trek GorakShep to Pheriche which will be a steep descent to 13,945 feet. We will wake up early today for a pre- dawn climb to the famous Kala Patthar viewpoint. From Kala Patthar we can witness a marvelous sunrise on Mt. Everest and the surrounding peaks. After savoring the panorama, we will return to Gorakshep for breakfast and to pick up our gear. We then descend back down the beautiful valley to Pheriche.

10, November 2017: Trek to Namche Bazaar at 11,285 feet. We will have a long day filled with mesmerizing views on our return journey to Tengboche and then drop down to cross the DudhKosi and climb and contour for a return to the town of Namche.

11, November 2017: Trek to Lukla at 9,350 feet. This will be our last day on the trekking trails and it will be a long but rewarding day as we make a return down the DudhKosi valley. Eventually, we will reach the town of Lukla our final stay on this trek.

12, November 2017: Finally, the last day our our trek.  We will take our morning flight back to to Kathmandu where we can relax and refresh (I.e. Enjoy a hot shower) from our days on the trekking trail prior to flying home to the UK the following morning.
