Osteoporosis causes significant amounts of pain, stops people being active and can really affect day to day quality of life. More than 3 million people in the UK are expected to have osteoporosis, with 500,000 bones being broken as a direct effect. It is caused by bones becoming brittle and less strong due to hormonal changes and deficiencies. In particular, those over 50 are more at risk, especially post-menopausal women; 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men are expected to break a bone after 50.
Treating broken bones is simple, however the treatment for osteoporosis is not straightforward, nor totally risk free, with some being quite daunting such as expensive injections.
Supporting ROS and raising awareness is something that means a lot to us- I'm sure many others have experienced the pain and discomfort that comes with breaking bones. For those with osteoporosis the fear of breaking bones and the risks that come with it very real, particularly as the healing process and likelihood of further breaks is high.
I will be running the London Marathon 2020 (now October2021!) this year with my good friend Orlando in order to raise awareness of osteoporosis which is crucial as, 1 in 5 women who have broken bones will break 3 more before being diagnosed highlighting the importance of early diagnosis.
We are also aiming to raise £3400 for the Royal Osteoporosis Society who help support those suffering from osteoporosis, as well as fund research key in understanding the cause and impacts of osteoporosis, as well as fund important research to find cures and treatments to improve the outlook of suffers.
Thank you for your support and we'll be sure to keep you posted on our progress!
'Few people in the UK really understand what osteoporosis is. Even fewer understand the true extent of the impact it has on lives; robbing those affected of self-confidence, reducing independence and making everyday activities a challenge. That's why we're driving research for the development of new medications and treatments – we are determined to find a cure. We dream of a future without osteoporosis. You can help make it a reality.'
