Later on this year I am taking part in the iconic Ride 100, an epic charity bike ride starting and finishing in London. Prior to that I have the small hurdle to overcome of an Ironman in July. 3.8km swim, 190km ride and 42km run. This is my first triathalon of this distance and I am both dreading and looking forward to it.
The background to FeMan (Fe is my name but also Iron in the periodic table, get it? Best puns always need explaining).
Last year, while on honeymoon in Canada, I signed myself up to race Ironman Austria (race is an optimistic term, I will be there to complete not compete). In nine weeks time I am willingly going to move my body
140 miles (226km) via the medium of swim, bike, run.
Why? I question I frequently asked by friends, parents, the lady whose dog we walk (although never once my husband- I guess he knows knows me better than I give him credit for). The reason is not particularly strong. 5 years ago I set a pre 30th birthday bucket list. It was a short list; Olympic distance triathlon, marathon, half Ironman, full Ironman. This goal was set with having no idea what triathlon entailed, indeed I couldn't even swim front crawl, but the ITU triathlon series was going to Leeds and it seemed like a good idea. But being a proud Yorkshire woman I never back down from a challenge and so with three out of the four ticked of just the infamous Ironman remains!
