Charlton Lido swim 100km in 100days · 1 January 2023

Our humanitarian work, clearing landmines and other debris of war, creates safe & secure environments in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. We save lives and lift local families out of poverty by creating jobs for deminers and we prepare the way for development and long term stability.

Story

5 weeks after a knee operation I signed the Charlton Lido 100km in 100 days challenge, but I have had to adapt it to 60 days as I am having more knee surgery on the 1st March.

In 2017 I had a pelvic osteotomy ( cut my pelvis into 3 pieces and then screwed it back in a better position!) due to bilateral hip dysplasia, I spent 5 months non weight bearing and it took 2 years of rehab to fully recover. I have also had 4 surgeries on my knees and am due to have another at the start of March. I have had long rehab periods with a lot time on crutches and challenging rehab programmes. I have been fortunate to have access to first world health care facilities and I don't live in fear of stepping on a landmine.

As I prepare for my next operation I have been happy to be able to be back in the pool, I have been thinking a lot about the men, women and children who have their lives turned upside down when they are injured by landmines.  I am not looking for sympathy for my own journey, and although I cant imagine how devastating it must be to have life changing injuries but I feel I have some insight into the challenges of limb injury and disabilities, and I know how important the support arounds me is. The lows can be very low, and sometimes I wonder if there are really any highs, but then I realise how lucky I am, and although each time it seems to get harder, it's important to get back up again.

This HALO Trust does really vital work with education and support in high risk areas, it also trains locals to help detect and clear landmines within their community. The effects of landmines and their lasting legacy are devastating and life changing, and they are often found where children play, and on vital community and farming land.

I would really like to raise money to support the prevention of the devastating injuries, often to children, caused by landmines.
