Story
So the story behind our skydive is a deeply personal one. About a year and a half ago, our mother, at the age of 54, was diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer's. As you can imagine, the adjustment needed for this from all the family was very turbulent, and as a family we've had to deal with an aggressive and degenerative disease together. There has been a lot of grief and lot of stress, but it has made us a stronger unit.
Alzheimer's is a growing problem, and one that doesn't get enough media coverage, nor enough research done into the causes and possible cures. Therefore, Alzheimer's Society is a charity we have a lot of respect for, and to be able to raise money for them is something we are very proud of.
Our Mother described the effects of Alzheimers as frustrating; thoughts and memories come and go in an instance, but leave merely a shadow. This is extremely frustrating for her, as she knows the information she wants to attain is there, she just can't access it. She also can feel at times isolated, due to the fact that at the age of 54 she had to stop work Additionally, Alzheimer's attacks confidence in every way; expression, communication, being alone, meeting new people and at times having to reply on the goodness of strangers.
Yet, in typical fashion, and despite all she's been through, she says "At the end of the day, I am mostly well and still enjoying my life, so I'm just going to focus on that". Positive thinking at its best, and an inspiration for us all.
I hope you can all contribute as much as you're able, and we really look forward to doing something terrifying in name of our fantastic mother. This is not a thrill-seeking adventure.
