Story

Losing a loved one is tough. I personally don't think I've figured out how to process grief and cannot begin to imagine the strife my childhood close friend is going through as she recently lost her mum to cancer. Throughout the short 12 years, I've known her, Ann was the kindest soul who never failed to make me crackle with laughter or feel at home each time I visited. Ann was full of wisdom but one of the most down to earth people who never took themselves too seriously.

I still remember quite vividly the first time we met: I was walking back home and bumped into her and Tasha. Having just fallen out with Tasha who was nursing her twisted arm after my failure to recognise my strength during playground playfight ended with her injury. I was nervous, probably more scared and definitely ought to be both! Tasha informed her mum I was the culprit. This failed to ease my anxiety in the context that I had heard Ann understandably sounding very upset with this "Michael" who hurt her daughter... But she smiled, walking up to me and with a slightly cheeky grin said "ooh, you're Michael". I got a stern grilling which left me feeling weirdly warm as I could tell it came from a place of love. She didn't realise back then how impactful such a healthy interaction and lesson in dealing with conflict/scolding meant for a child who had just moved to a new care home, I don't think I properly did until reflecting on it now. This memory sticks up and boldly reminds me of Ann's character. A protective mother, who has bottomless love, care and regard for all.

I'm not really great with emotions but I'm okay with a camera and fortunate enough to be blessed with two legs so I gonna do my bit in memory of Ann to raise money for Myton Hospice as they did their utmost best to care for Ann through till the end.

This February, I’m running 56 miles (and 📸 events) in Memory of Ann Simms to help raise money for Myton Hospice.
