Story

Hello,

I am Joseph Wigley and will be cycling the Devon coast to coast trail and doing a sailing marathon for Salisbury hospice.

I am aged 13 and come from Combwich, Somerset. I am a keen dinghy sailor and cyclist, my Grandpa loved cycling and was very interested in my sailing, that is why I picked these events!

3 years ago my Grandpa (Doh) was diagnosed with a fast growing brain tumour. Sadly he died 7 months later having spent his last few weeks in the hospice. The quality of his treatment was extremely high and the staff were very friendly.

I will be cycling the Devon coast to coast (99+ miles), Sustrans route 27, from Ilfracombe to Plymouth in 5 days. My parents will alternate driving and cycling while I do the whole route.

Also for every £1.00 donated I will sail a minute in my Laser dinghy on Durleigh resevoir, many thanks to Durleigh Sailing Club.

I feel this is the least I could do to say thank you for the exellent work the hospice does!

Many thanks for looking at this page and your continued support,

Joseph

UPDATE: Done cycle and sailing, decided to round the sailing to 20 hours!

Wednesday 4th - Started in Ilfracombe Harbour with dad, cycled up steep climb onto Exmoor and down to campsite in Braunton, got attacked by a bramble on my neck! Total 12 miles.

Thursday 5th - Braunton to Great Torrington with mum, 20 miles. On to Sheepwash with dad, 11 miles.  Beautiful sunny day, stunning scenery. 31 miles today, total 43 miles.

Friday 6th - Sheepwash to Okehampton. Heavy rain cut day short, starting to ache! 15 miles today, total 58 miles.

Saturday 7th - Okehampton to Lydford with mum, carried on with dad to Tavistock, felt quite ill that night - sore hands and feeling a bit sick. 22 miles today, total 80 miles.

Sunday 8th - Struggling today, managed Tavistock to Clearbrook. Did a half day of 9 miles, total 89 miles.

Monday 9th - Clearbrook to Plymouth, stopping for candyfloss at Sutton Harbour in the sunshine! All three of us finished the route at The Admiral's Hard - cycled to the end of the slipway! Cycled 14 miles today.

Giving me a grand total of: 103 miles cycled.
