Story
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read and support us...
Although we may not look like it, we are not the "fittest" however after much deliberation in 2021 (Squirrel signing us up before asking!!) we decided to take part in the Longest Day (72 holes in a day) Golf Challenge. We successfully raised £1200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. In hindsight we were a bit late to the party and fell a little short of our expectations in regards to money raised and also didn't fully appreciate the toll it would take physically and mentally so we swore never to do it again.....so being committed folk we have decided to give it another go this year!!!
For the non-golfers among you, you may wonder why this is a "challenge". Well 72 holes is approx. 24 miles of walking, depending on where the ball ends up, as well as being in the region of 400 golf shots each, hopefully a few less, so the day is quite demanding. Even the professionals, with Caddies only every play 36 holes in a day. St Athan is also a 9 hole course, so we are going to be going round and round and round and .... well you get it!!
This year we are looking to raise money for a local charity, LATCH, that helped Leigh and his family massively while his son was going through treatment.
"LATCH supports the children and their families who are being treated by the Oncology Unit at the Children's Hospital of Wales, whose catchment area stretches from Chepstow in the south, to Aberystwyth in the North. Around 70 new cases are diagnosed every year"
Over the last 3 years we have witnessed the impact of Cancer and seen how Latch and multiple other organisations have supported our loved ones and friends in all manner of ways.
We are taking part in this even as a celebration of Leighs 4 year old son (H) who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma when he was 2 and has now been given the all clear and has rung the bell for his end of treatment.
"When my son was diagnosed my life was shattered and I didn't know where I was coming or going. Latch was a huge help during his diagnosis and treatment and helped with everything from giving a place for parents to stay if they were having to travel, helping the kids during their stay in hospital by providing entertainment and toys as well as arranging themed parties for families to attend."
We are also doing this in memory of our very good friend Tom who, at the age of 29 lost his battle to Cancer, but would have been one of the first to jump at an opportunity to do something ridiculous like this.
We will be playing on Saturday 18th June and will be starting at 5am and continuing until we finish at RAF ST Athan Golf Club in the Vale of Glamorgan (We thank them for agreeing to host us) and will send out regular updates on the day.
Please feel free to come and support us on the day should the weather be favourable.
We hope that you will be kind enough to donate to this fabulous cause and we thank you for your generous support.
Squirrel, Fav, Luke and Pete.
