Great South Run 2010 · 24 October 2010 ·

SMA UK is a national charity supporting anyone affected by spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic, neuromuscular condition that causes muscle weakness and loss of movement. We offer support and information and advocate on issues important to the SMA Community.

Story

Hi all,

I may be a glutton for punishment, but I think it's important to raise money for charity, so off I go again to pound the streets of . This year I will be undertaking the Great South Run for my nephew Carter and a charity that makes a big difference to his, and his mother Tanya's, life, The Jennifer Trust.  As some of you may know Carter has a condition called SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and the Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atrophy is the only national charity in the dedicated to supporting children and adults affected by SMA as well as investing in invaluable research into causes, treatments and eventually a cure.  SMA is a genetic neuromuscular condition which causes muscle weakness in varying degrees of severity.  In its severest form, Type I SMA is fatal usually before the second birthday and is the highest cause of genetic deaths among infants in the today.  Children affected by Type II SMA will never walk and rely on electrically powered wheelchairs to gain independence and mobility.
Every year around 2000 individuals, families and healthcare professionals turn to the Jennifer Trust for support, advice and information as they aim to provide 'help for today and hope for tomorrow' to all those affected by SMA.  Carter is a bright, fabulous nine year old boy, who has all the same interests as any other boy of his age, and whose quality of life is very much helped through the support offered by the Jennifer Trust.  On his behalf, and that of all other children in a similar situation, and their parents, I ask for whatever sponsorship you feel you can give for my run to support this exceptionally worthy charity.

thanks
