Charity of the Year 2013
GKN and its employees have always been very generous towards many and varied charities over the years. This year we have committed to focusing our efforts on supporting one charity in the hope that we can help them achieve great things. This focus is driven by us all knowing someone at GKN, or outside work, who has been affected by cancer.
For 2013, we have committed to supporting the Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Services goal to raise £20,000 for Wessex Cancer Trust, by being the main sponsor of their “100 Here 100 There” charity cycle ride.
Do not let the name fool you, the Wessex Cancer Trust supports cancer sufferers and their families on the Island by providing support and education for patients, families and carers and professionals as well as promoting cancer prevention and funding early detection and research. The Charity also fund the Daisy bus which commutes people from the Island to the hospitals in Southampton for their cancer treatment. The charity also provides companions for those needing support and a hand to hold throughout their treatment. The key focus was ensuring the funds will stay on the Isle of Wight.
In 2013 the Wessex Cancer Trust is planning to open a drop in support centre in Newport, Isle of Wight; the £20,000 we are hoping to raise will be to fit the centre out and supply things such as computer terminals, pay for qualified staff and maybe even a treatment room.
Our goal at GKN is to encourage 100 employees and / or friends / family members to sign up to the challenge of cycling either 100 miles or 100Km round the Isle of Wight on Sunday 30th June 2013. The target is raising £50 each in sponsorship; this would mean we could contribute a minimum of £5K towards this goal. The senior team will all be involved and have committed to a team goal of £10K
