The Heart Hospital London to Paris Bike Ride · 17 May 2006 ·
Welcome to my fundraising page!
The great news is, much to my immense joy (and relief!), I have been offered a place to study Medicine at St George’s, University of London. Hooray!
It’s been a long journey – having been unable to transfer in the second year of my Economics degree at Edinburgh , I decided to follow my dreams and really go for it following my graduation last May. Although I had a fabulous time whilst at Edinburgh and met loads of great people, the career options following on from my degree really weren’t right for me.
However, I was about to go off to Thailand, teaching for three months – I found myself sitting in a little internet cafe filling out my UCAS form night after night! Still, it was absolutely all worth it, and on my return I volunteered at Northwick Park Hospital , before being lucky enough to find work here at the Heart as a medical secretary for the GUCH unit.
I have really learnt a lot while being here – I’ve seen open heart surgery, been on ward rounds and been to clinic, and have had lots of patient contact. I have thoroughly enjoyed it all - and really would like to take the opportunity to give something back by taking part in the GUCH Department’s London to Paris Bike Ride Challenge.
We are hoping to raise essential funds to maintain and improve the levels of care we offer our patients. One in a hundred babies is born with a heart defect, so congenital heart disease could affect any one of us in some way.
This bike ride is going to be an immense personal challenge for me physically and mentally so dig deep! It’s a cause I really believe in, and rest assured, I won’t be taking part in another sponsored event for a good while!
Best wishes and thanks,
Emma x
