Story
Cpl Gokul Chhetri and his team (Cpl Bal BM, Cpl Manoj, Cpl Sonic) from Gurkha Coy, ITC Catterick will be running a total distance of 69 km together as a team to mark the 69th Gurkha Company Birthday on 8 Aug 20. The event will bring up a realistic crossover to mark the Birthday whilst raising money for well-known charity organisation 'Gurkha Welfare Trust' (GWT) and promote health awareness. Cpl Gokul is leading this Charity event for the nobel cause of GWT.
We chose to raise money for the GWT because it ensures that Gurkha veterans with no pensions, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity in Nepal, through the provision of financial, medical and community aid. GWT is the principal UK charity dedicated to the provision of aid to Gurkha veterans and their dependants in Nepal, and increasingly in the UK and elsewhere. The trust established in 1969, operates through 20 Area Welfare Centres (AWC) spread across traditional Gurkha recruiting areas in Nepal as well as one in Darjeeling, India. The trust have 400 staffs working in the region. The GWT also runs an extensive rural water and sanitation programme in Nepal and also invests in community aid projects for the wider Nepalese population.
We as a team will start the 69 km run in the early morning of 8 Aug 20 and it is intended to complete before the 69th Gurkha Coy birthday celebration commences at Helles Barracks, ITC Catterick. We will be using the STARVA application for those who wish to follow.
We hope to raise as much as money for GWT in this global pandemic. The trust has not only been admirable during this uncharted time of our generation but also over the years, it has undoubtedly provided tremendous service to our veterans and their families. Hence, it is nothing but our obligation to try to at least match their effort, if not do more. Your small contribution towards this charity will can make a significant difference.
