My Dad will always be my hero. He was a kind and generous person with a big heart. He was always ready to help anyone that needed it wether that was being generous with his time, his skill of fixing pretty much anything or his advice and a listening ear.

When I was 17 my dad died aged 52 from cancer. Even towards the end of his illness he was willing to participate in studies to help other people going through the same thing.

My Father suffered from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Watching him struggle through treatment and fighting to survive really were the darkest days for my whole family.

The only treatment available that could have a chance of helping him was a stem cell transplant. This was tried with his own stem cells but was not effective. Stem cell donations were sought from his siblings but they were not a match

This is when my family were introduced to The Anthony Nolan Trust. This charity runs a register of stem cell donors. All of my immediate family signed up to the register in the hope of one of us being a match for my Dad, but unfortunately none of us were.

Sadly, although a match was found for him the transplant was unsuccessful because of how advanced his cancer was. This really made an impression on all of us that knew him, that giving someone, even a total stranger that chance to survive such a dreadful disease was truly the greatest gift to give to another human being. My family will be forever grateful for the person who tried to save my Dad.

My aim is to get as many people aged 16-30 years to join the register. If you can spit in a tube then please sign up it takes 5 minutes to do online. YOU could be the person who saves someone’s life. There is no greater gift you can give. It costs you nothing but it costs the trust around £60 for someone to be on their register.
