Story
In Sept 2015, my younger brother Daniel Le Fleur was diagnosed with a rare type of glioblastoma in his spinal cord, it is cancerous and is less 5% of all cancers. Before we knew what it was, we spent an agonising 4 months before that wondering what it was that was slowly eating away at him, impairing his ability to walk and eventually his entire lower body functions. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemo and 3 months in various hospitals later he and his long term girlfriend of 11 years Natalie McCullough who was staying with him on a pull-out bed arrived back home, well, not exactly their home as their flat was up a flight of steep stairs and not wheel chair friendly, so moved back to Mum and Dad's to live for a while until they were able to move to a new ground floor flat. Dan is wheelchair bound for now, unable to use the majority of his lower body functions. Each cycle of chemotherapy has been tough on him, and he is usually very sick for a few days after each treatment. However both Natalie and he have remained strong and positive and with the love and support of his friends and family we continue to fight this Cancer.
After 11 years with his rock and loving soul mate Natalie, Dan popped the question. And despite the hospital swapping, treatment, care assistants, flat hunting, home moving and marriage arrangements we fast forward to today where they just got married at the weekend and we have a new Le Fleur in the Family. They are now away on their honeymoon.
Every day in the UK there are more than 400 people diagnosed with cancer and with over 200 types of cancer charities like this keep fighting the quest to find a cure for each one. Everyone has had their own way of dealing with this and although I have not been able to be by my brothers side as much as I would have wished this is my way of helping this life threatening disease. I might not be as physically fit as I used to be back when at Crown Takewondo Federation and this 10k obstacle course (www.theadrenalinerush.com) will probably put me in a wheelchair but at the moment the only way to fight this cancer is by lots of medicine, and chemo so I am doing this to help the continued research into fighting cancer. Over the past 40 years the survival rate of cancer victims has doubled thanks to Cancer Research UK and is why I choose them to raise money for.
If I put myself in my brothers shoes I don't think I would be still here today, he is the strongest person I know and of course he has had his lows during this but he is generally very positive and with his wife Natalie by his side the pair are a force to be reckoned with and will remain strong and battle this all the way through.
Stay strong little brother, I love you with all my heart and will always be there for you. We will put our sparring kit back on and fight this together!
