This is lovely Libby one of our daughters friends who has been fighting Osteosarcaoma for the last year. Myself, Gary, along with 2 other dads Dave and Martin plus friends Chris, Elliot and Sean will be running the Surrey Half Marathon in March to support Spread a Smile a charity that has helped Libby so much over the last year.
In January 2018 Libby aged 7 was diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. Libby immediately began treatment which consisted of aggressive chemotherapy for 6 months followed by a big operation to successfully remove the reduced sized tumour. This required removing 2/3rds of her left tibia and replacing it with a full size titanium prosthesis.
Follow up chemotherapy was then required for a further 5 months. During this time Libby has been relearning to walk again which has been a very long up hill struggle but Libby is very resilient and has shown us her strength to carry on.
During Libby’s stay in UCLH a central London hospital over the last year Spread a Smile has offered comfort and entertainment allowing Libby to be a 7 year old again helping her forget her worries and find her giggle.
Finally on December 20th 2018 Libby rang the bell to signify the end of her treatment!!
Libby and her family are hugely grateful to the Spread a Smile team for just being there.
Our mission at Spread a Smile is to brighten the days of seriously ill children and teenagers in hospital by taking teams of entertainers into paediatric and adolescent wards. We take magicians, musicians, fairies, poets, singers, face painters, artists and two Pet Therapy dogs into Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, The Royal London, St. Mary’s & The Evelina, to bring much needed joy to these courageous children and teenagers. We also want to help patients and their families create lasting and positive memories.
