1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer. At Prostate Cancer UK, we’re giving every man the power to navigate it. With over £100 million invested in research, treatment, and care, we’re building a future where prostate cancer no longer cuts men’s lives short. Together, we can help save men’s lives.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page where I'm planning to raise £2,000 for Prostate Cancer UK by completing the Virgin Money London Marathon.

It's fair to say I'm a man who likes a challenge.

From trying to become ambidextrous by making hot drinks left handed, to giving up booze for the whole of 2013, I’ve left friends and colleagues perplexed by my motives.

However, in 2015 I have a clear goal – to raise bundles of money for Prostate Cancer UK and raise awareness of a disease that kills one man every hour in the UK.

I’m 14 days shy of completing #365shirts, whereby I’ve sported a different shirt every day this year, while my efforts of watching #365films, are just about still alive. Number 329 was Waiting, if you’re interested…..

But the biggest challenge lies ahead – 26.2 miles ahead to be precise.

I’m hitting the fabled streets of London to take on the most famous marathon of them all on April 26.

So why this year?

I’m Sports PR Manager at Prostate Cancer UK and have been here since November 2013. I volunteered at the event last year and left suitably inspired by some truly amazing people.

Having reported on sport for more than 15 years, this will be the first time I’m in the limelight and I’ve never completed a double digit mileage on foot. So my thoughts right now are a mixture of excitement and trepidation but I’m off and running with my training, and feeling good right now.

Working at this inspirational place with some truly incredible colleagues you simply cannot avoid this massive issue. One in eight men in the UK are affected by prostate cancer and I’ve been personally affected by the disease.

It beat my granddad in the early 80s but couldn’t outwit my old man a few years ago. I’m so proud of his efforts and while I know there is a chance it will affect me, my little brother and my son in years to come, such is the hereditary nature of the disease, I refuse to sit back and wait.

So, like me, please get on the front foot and support my challenge. This is #notjustavest.

Cheers, Gary
