Care and rehabilitation of grey seal pups

Story

In November 21 Storm Arwen struck causing devastation to the
seal colonies on the east coasts of Scotland and Northern England. Hundreds of
seal pups were killed, but there were survivors.

Hessilhead was asked to take some pups, and these white
coats arrived shocked, starving and sometimes injured. Our small seal unit was
soon full, but there were more pups needing help and we heard that bigger seal
centres were already filled to capacity.

There was no where else for these pups to go so we had to
help. We set about clearing storage units, removing shelves, putting in new
floors and installing heat lamps. We adapted some of our outdoor enclosures for
older pups.

At present we have 33 grey seal pups in care, approximately
3 times our usual number of seals at this time of year. This is putting a huge
strain on our resources as it costs £100 a week to keep each pup, and the
average stay in care is 10 weeks (£1000 to rear each seal pup)

We are pleased to have been able to offer care and
rehabilitation to so many pups this winter. Perhaps you maybe able to help with
the costs by making a donation for seal meals.
