Dementia has played a massive part in my life. My lovely gran passed away on 11/9/2015 at the glorious age of 96 after suffering from dementia for many years. She was a fiesty independent lady, who lived in her home of 76 years until 18 months ago when it became unsafe for her to live alone (although she argued otherwise!!).
During the early years of gran's condition the effects of dementia made her forgetful and frustrated with her short term memory loss, however, she enjoyed her life and continued to play bingo, knit and take an active role in our family life. She was the delight of many onlookers in Disney land Paris when she rode 'Thunder Mountain Railroad' at the age of 85!!
Sadly during the last 18 months, Gran's condition became more severe and her personality changed to a more aggressive nature, causing distress to herself and our family.
Due to our lack of knowledge about this condition and where help could be obtained, we struggled to look after gran as a family. It was both physically and emotionally draining, especially for my mother who was Gran's main carer.
During the last week of Grans life we were lucky enough to have help in the form of carers, district nurses and a wonderful night sitter on Gran's last night. This lovely lady helped us prepare for Gran's passing and took the fear out of what we were about to face.
We can never thank these people enough and Gran fell asleep, peacefully cwtched up in her bed.
I want to raise money so that other families affected by this cruel condition can receive help and awareness. That lovely lady who cared for all of us on Gran's last night will never know how much she means to us.
