My wife Julie and I set up the Foundation in memory of our beautiful and inspirational daughter Sara who sadly passed away at the age of 16 in 2001 following a two year horrendous battle with a very rare and aggressive form of colon cancer. Our family relocated to Crete in 2011 and opened Sara`s Retreat . The charity funds a weeks respite break for children and young people from the UK who are fighting cancer.This week gives the child/young person an opportunity to be `normal` again after enduring painful and long term treatment - it`s the light at the end of a dark tunnel . From personal experience we realised that the trauma of dealing with the cancer journey affects the whole family, often parents have to take time off work resulting in financial hardship and in some cases we have met families who went bankrupt because of this terrible situation, often siblings feel neglected .So the Foundation funds flights for the whole immediate family. This is priceless and over the last 7 years we have witnessed first hand how much this benefits the family. It strengthens relationships,lets the family be `normal` again and most importantly provides an opportunity to forget about the horrendous and life changing journey and gives them the confidence to move forward with a positive attitude.Since 2011  we have welcomed 110 families from throughout the UK and the week in the sunshine is the perfect tonic.We provide 24 hr practical and emotional care during the week , transporting  the family to chosen activities eg waterpark,beach,boat trips, restaurants, Greek nights etc to relieve and stress. We also are happy to share these experiences with them .Sadly a very small minority of the children who have visited Sara`s Retreat have passed away, however the family comment that have precious and happy memories from their week at Sara's Retreat and look at photographs with a smile.

The local community have embraced the charity and the families arrive as tourists and leave as life long friends. We are currently renting a wonderful family friendly villa with a swimming pool for the families this season but it is the Foundation`s aim to build a bespoke property in the near future.

We are in the UK for 10 weeks and it is our challenge to raise 10,000 GBP in the 10 weeks .Many of Sara`s family and friends have organised various fun filled fundraising events throughout the UK and lots of Sara`s friends who cannot make the events have asked how they could contribute to the challenge ..... so all funds raised on this page will go towards our 10 grand challenge...this is a very big challenge but nothing compared to the challenge for a child when he/she is diagnosed with cancer
