Story

Update 28th August 2011- Its been a very busy few weeks! I had a fantastic sunday at Asda Walmart with my friends and we raised just over £400 and the quiz night also went really well. I have now also got most of my kit and had all of my jabs (ouch!) With only a month to go before I set off I want to thank everyone again for helping to get to 80% raised, not far to go now to reach the goal of £4,000 which really will make such a difference to the Children that we are helping so if you havent donated yet please give whatever amount that you can x

Update- 3rd August 2011- Well I have just exceeded the 50% mark so a huge thank you to everyone who has helped me get there and donated. We held a branch fundraising day on Friday and raised £91 and I have been busy orgainising the Quiz night and Raffle that will be held at the Cricketers Pub in Alresford on Thursday 25th August at 7pm. Entry to the quiz will be £5per person and its looking as though it will be a successfull evening. My facepaints have also arrived now for the Asda Fundrasing day on the 21st and I have a great group of family friends who have volunteered to help. Training is going well and I managed 2 consecutive days walking over the Dorset Coastline in addition to short evening treks throughout the week. Still alot to do though with another £1920 to raise so please give generously and donate what you can. x

UPDATE 21ST JUNE- Wow my total is now at £1251.00 and I am proud to have such generous friends! THE TREK- Day 1After breakfast we’ll depart on an acclimatization trekking day around Uru North – a ruralcommunity situated in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. The trek will help everybody acclimatize to the new environment whilst providing a fascinating cultural tour through a traditional Chagga Day 2: After breakfast we’ll depart to visit a Save the Children project in Arusha. This is an opportunity togain a unique insight into Save the Children’s work in Tanzania and should prove an inspiring and fascinating experience. Day 3: After breakfast we will transfer to Machame Gate, set deep in the cloud forest that surrounds Mt Kilimanjaro. After signing in at the National Park Gate we will begin a slow and very steady walk from Machame Gate at 1800m to Machame Hut at 2980m. This day takes 4-5 hours, a gradual ascent through thick cloud forest. Arrive in camp and relax, enjoying the incredible views of Kibo Peak.Day 4: After breakfast at Machame Hut a steep ascent takes us along the Machame ridge line, gradually working its way up to the Shira Plateau. Spectacular views of Kibo Peak follow us the whole way. Lunch will be taken en-route, before arriving onto the Shira Plateau at early afternoon and onwards to Shira Hut at 3,840m (5-6 hrs). From here the true vista of our surroundings becomes apparent, with spectacular views both of Kibo Peak, and out west towards Mt Meru and the Maasai Highlands. The afternoon gives us good restingopportunities with an optional short acclimatization trek. Day 5: After breakfast at Shira Hut we will head east across the plateau on a gradual incline. The gradual ascent over the Shira Plateau takes us up to an altitude of 4,400m providing valuableacclimatization. With lunch en-route we will descend in the afternoon down to the Baranco Campsite, set at the base of the Baranco Wall at 3,950m. Baranco Campsite offers some of the most spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Day 6 After a very early breakfast we will head east up the Baranco Wall, a height gain of 700ft. From here we continue over the ridges and valleys to the Karanga Valley and an early lunch. From Karanga Valley we’ll ascend up to Barafu Hut at 4,600m. Today will take 7-8hrs including the short lunch stop. Dinner is served around 16:00, and we’ll sleep as early as possible. This day will be tough due to the altitude.Day 7: Beginning at midnight snacks are served and we’ll begin an extremely slow ascent across the scree slopes towards Stella Point. First light comes up around 05:30AM, and we’ll reach Stella Point for around sun-rise. From Stella Point it is a gentle ascent around to Uhuru Peak: TheRoof of Africa. After admiring some of the views, we’ll descend back to Stella Point and down to Barafu Camp. At Barafu Camp we’ll rest up for one or two hours with lunch being served. From Barafu Camp we descend down to Mweka Hut, arriving late afternoon for dinner and a well earned nights rest!Day 8: After breakfast we’ll descend down to Mweka Gate, a gradual decline through the heath and cloud forest. At Mweka Gate we’ll sign-out and receive our Uhuru Peak Certificates!

What will the money raised do?

More than 8 million children are still dying every year before they reach their fifth birthday. We need to act together, now, to change this appalling reality.

£3 will treat eight children with diarrhoea,£10 will feed two children in Ethiopia for a hundred days, £25 buys ‘safe birth kits’ for five women giving birth at home,£100 trains a health worker like Suman to save children’s lives

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
