Story
Newsflash! Peter, my fellow walker and organiser supreme of the KS, has announced he will join me in having his head shaved as well! What a legend!
November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, promoted by the charityPancreatic Cancer UK (PCUK) - www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/. As part of the national activities to makepeople more aware of PC and to help raise funds to support the great work that PCUK does, I am having a sponsored head-shave on 3 December. So please sponsor me to lose my glorious (I wish) locks!
You will probably know that my lovely wife Jane died of PC nearly 3 years ago, and the beginning of December marks the 3rd anniversary of the start of her chemo, which she feared would mean losing her hair – she didn’t,but I plan to lose mine!
Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fifth biggest cancer killer in the UK and itis predicted to overtake breast cancer as the 4th most common cancer killer by2030. This is because, whilst survival rates for most forms of cancer have beenrising, the five-year survival rates for PC have remained largely unchanged andshockingly low for the past 40 years. Thisis less than 4% across the UK, and is the worst survival outcome for any of the21 most common cancers. Despite this, PC receives only 1% of the NationalCancer Research Institute partner’s site-specific research spend, or just £5.2million a year. (£3,539.53 per death per year is spent on breast cancerresearch compared to just £618.54 per death per year on pancreatic cancer). Sofund-raising for support and research is vital to help tackle PC.
You can do your bit to support the work of PCUK, by helping me reach andexceed my fundraising target. And, if I get to £100, I will match it with adonation to my local Pilgrim’s Hospice, who do great work in palliative andend-of-life care and looked after Jane wonderfully in her final weeks. So please dig deep!
Before After
Yes…I will be bald as a coot on the 3rdDecember!
