Match the Master · 23 November 2021

1000 children in Inverclyde will not have a holiday, not be clothed properly and feel marginalised. Britain is the sixth largest economy in the world with more millionaires than ever,so why have 330,000 food parcels been handed out to hungry children, with Inverclyde accounting for 4000 of these parcels. It’s time to think Mission statement: Tackle Child Poverty Promote Equality Stimulate Children Encourage Participation Poverty can have a profound impact on the child, their family, and the rest of society. It often sets in motion a deepening spiral of social exclusion, creating problems in education, employment, mental and physical health and social interaction.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is George Byng, I have lived in Inverclyde for almost all my life, except for 8 years in Australia. I have been training in weightlifting and power lifting for 70 years, I started when I was just 15 years old! I have been Scottish, British and Australian weightlifting champion and a record holder on Olympic Lifting and power lifting over the years. I was also the Scottish National Olympic Coach from 1974 - 1981.

There is a lot of social deprivation within Inverclyde, which is on the West Coast of Scotland, 25 miles west of Glasgow. So I have decided to help raise money for “Children in Poverty Inverclyde”, a Scottish Registered charity SC044563.

I will be 85 years old on the 23rd November 2021 and on that date I intend to lift an Imperial Ton or 2240lbs (1020kg), in 120 seconds or 2 minutes. This will be held at 7.30pm at the Greenock Sports Centre, in The Strength Shed, Nelson Street, Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland.

I will do this by lifting 85kgs in the Deadlift for 4 sets of 3 repetitions, if all goes well! I have invited from across Inverclyde - strong men and women of all ages and body weights to try to equal or exceed my lift, using accepted formulas for body weights and age related competitions, the challenge will be worked on a level playing field.

My family - which includes my wife Maureen, 4 children, 6 grandchildren (4 living in Inverclyde and 2 living in Vancouver, Canada) and many other relatives and friends - are all supporting my effort, to raise money for such an worthy charity.

I would be grateful of any donations you can give to this cause.

Thank you,

George Byng
