Story

UPDATE: I finished the ride on Friday 11th September after 170 miles including the North and South Downs as well as the hills of the Isle of Wight! Our family is totally amazed at the generosity and love we have experienced as a result of this ride and we want to say a very big thank you to everyone who has been so kind in so many ways.

I’m doing (done now! - but here's the story with added comments in italics:) a sponsored cycle ride in aid of PEEPS in memory of my grandson, Sullivan (Sulley) Thomas Rivers. Sutton to Sandown via Brighton and round the Isle of Wight in three days, which is around 200 miles (but proved to be 170 according to my bike 'computer' ).

PEEPS is the only UK charity (registered with the Charity Commission number 1179495) dedicated to supporting those affected by HIE. HIE stands for hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. It is a lack of oxygen to the brain that can cause injury, or very sadly for Sulley, death.

Beth and Dave, Sulley’s parents, want to celebrate his life and the love that surrounded him and have asked that PEEPS benefit from gifts in memory. They will also be pleased if any sponsored activities that their friends undertake as part of a ‘round-the-world’ challenge in his memory benefit PEEPS.And they are so grateful for all the support that has been given.

I’ve joined in with this and will be adding my distance to theirs as we aim together to walk, run or cycle 40,080 kilometres during the next 12 months.

The information provided by PEEPS helped Beth and Dave understand Sulley’s condition and they want to do something that will help other parents and children who find themselves affected. I will be leaving from their home in the London Borough of Sutton on either Wednesday 9th or 16th September (it was the 9th and I had great weather for cycling), depending on the best weather forecast!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

PS - the original photo was from a previous cycle ride in mid-Wales. Its Barmouth Bridge and I used it because it showed my bike and some lovely scenery as well as an iconic railway bridge! Now I'm showing the cliff road east of Freshwater that I cycled along, taken en route.
