Many of you will hopefully be aware of the regressive views on abortion being spread across America leading to the banning of abortion in several states. What most people aren’t aware of is that Trump’s administration is having an even more damaging impact worldwide. The US have pulled aid from all charities offering abortion services unless they stop providing abortions. Many charities (including Marie Stopes) have refused to stop providing abortions and so are now vastly underfunded. Access to contraception and abortion should be a human right, and 225 million women worldwide don’t want to get pregnant, but don’t have access to contraception or abortion services. Whilst women in America and Ireland often have the opportunity to travel to nearby states/countries to get an abortion, this is not an option for women living in poverty or dangerous situations. This leads to women seeking unsafe abortions which 31,000 women die from per year. By donating to Marie Stopes, we can hopefully undo a small part of the harmful impact of Trump’s administration and provide women with the choice they deserve.
