Story
For those of you who have never heard of IDAS, they're an independently run domestic abuse support service. They work along side the police in order to help domestic abuse victims regain their lives back. Whether it's supporting through the court process, safety planning for the future or holding your hand when you cry. Their compassion is overwhelming and their work is incredible, without their help many victims wouldn't be who they are today after suffering from something so life changing as domestic abuse.
The reason I have chosen to run the York 10K is to say thank you to IDAS, and I wish to carry on supporting them by taking part in further fundraising events as their cause is very important to me.
Domestic abuse seems to be a taboo subject. No one likes to talk about it. I think this is one of the problems, no one understands how helpless you feel and thinking that no one will believe you, and how incredibly hard it is to come forward and say your a victim to it. One of the main feelings that comes along with domestic abuse is shame. "How could I let this happen to me? I'm better than this.. Right? Maybe I'm not. Maybe I deserve it.." And in that moment you become trapped. The doubt has planted itself and then every time they put you down, you submit and believe it. However, with raising awareness we can help people understand that domestic abuse isn't a single incident, it's a process, a long drawn out process that you slowly become desensitised to. Also, if it was just physical abuse then maybe people wouldn't stay in the relationship. The emotional abuse and manipulation is 10 times stronger, your stripped of your confidence and self worth. They are the scars and bruises that are the hardest to heal and take the most time. With more people understanding this, I believe there will be more victims feeling confident enough to stand up and say no to any sort of abuse and reach out to people for support.
Please donate to this amazing charity and raise awareness. Domestic abuse is very dangerous, as many victims don't realise the situation they are in before it's taken too far. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men suffer from domestic abuse in their lifetime which is a terrifying thought and it's happening all around us. As they are independently run they need our support to carry on the amazing work that they do!
