Story
On 11th June I will be aiming to complete my first triathlon in Llanberis, Snowdonia. It’s a sprint distance - 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run, but a pretty hilly one, and I'm pretty scared!
I’m raising money for the Ehlers-Danlos Society, because I am completely inspired by my incredible cousin Abi Evans. The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes are a rare group of conditions that affect your connective tissue, and therefore can manifest throughout your whole body, causing problems such as joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility,, extreme fatigue and organ prolapse. It can also be associated with other conditions that can affect things like your heart rate and blood pressure, and your body’s ability to absorb food. All in all, it can be pretty debilitating, and affect sufferers in every way imaginable. There is no cure for EDS and so raising money for research and education is incredibly important.
Abi was diagnosed with hypermobile EDS in 2020, and despite all that she faces on a daily she is absolutely inspiring. Her achievements are astonishing - from being awarded a Flying Scholarship for Disabled People and being chosen as the 2022 Recipient of The Red Arrow Scholarship to being selected for wheelchair tennis development, all whilst finding time to educate people on the reality of living with EDS.
Basically Abs is resilient, determined, fierce, hilarious and absolutely kick ass. She inspires me every day, and so I hope that this will in some way help to raise awareness of EDS and help Abi with her amazing work!
