Everest Base Camp trek for VisPa · 28 August 2018

Friends of VisPa exists to put Christian faith into action and support VisPa school and orphanage. VisPa seeks to nourish each child and young person through the provision of education, food, clothing and healthcare to highly vulnerable children and young people in Kisumu, Kenya.

Story

My latest challenge is to trek to Everest Base Camp in October.

I am doing this for the unique challenge, the experience and the views.

I am going with a group of 18 others, and we are also raising funds towards building a new primary school for Vispa Emmanuel school, near Kisumu, Kenya.

The current primary school, which caters for around 300 pupils, in an impoverished community, consists of very basic metal sided and roofed structures (see the photos below that I took in 2016). The plan is to  replace these with a new brick built set of classrooms.

Friends of Vispa, based in Northern Ireland, have been working with Vispa Emmanuel for over 10 years, and in recent years have assisted in funding building at the secondary school, including a dormitory block primarily to increase the education potential for girls in that area.

I, additionally, have a particular interest in this charity and its work as I lived in Kisumu for a few of my childhood years.

The group are all funding the trip themselves and all funds raised will be going to the building project.
