My granma has Alzheimers and lives alone in the flat she has been living in for 30 years - with Alzheimer's it's best to keep her surroundings the same, as her short term memory is non existent so she's not able to deal with new situations very well.

As her next of kin, my sister and I have found it increasingly difficult dealing with her decline in mental and physical capacity.  The Islington Chinese Association (ICA) have been incredible in bridging the cultural gap as she reverts back to the child in her.  The level of care they have given our granma in this most difficult of circumstances often goes above and beyond the call of duty.  For our granma and for us they have been a real lifeline - the welfare of the elderly Chinese community in London is of uppermost concern to them.

The ICA have been amazing - they have arranged for Chinese speaking carers to look after her.  When she broke her arm 3 weeks ago, they took her to A&E and waited with her until I could get there.  Whenever we have meetings with Social Services, hospital appointments they have been there to reassure her and to translate for us.  When she leaves the gas on and triggers the alarm, and we can't get over to check everythings ok, they have been there. 

As with many other charities, the Islington Chinese Association's funding has been cut considerably.  Until 2 years ago they delivered Chinese meals on wheels, and recently had to reduce opening the community centre from 5 to 3 days a week.
