Every day 250 people in the UK start losing their sight. With your help, we can be there when people need us most, support independent living, create an inclusive society and prevent avoidable sight loss. Every pound you raise will help create a future where sight loss is no longer a barrier.

Story

My partner, Lisa, became registered blind in September 2014. She had no history of sight problems, but now has 50% vision in her left eye and no peripheral vision. Her life changed after September 2014, but the support of the RNIB and other organisations has helped Lisa adapt to her sight loss, return to work and have some semblance of normality in her life.

The RNIB are doing great things to help people with visual impairments, but here are some realities of sight loss:

- Only 1/3 of registered blind/partially sighted people of working age are in employment

- Only 8% of registered blind/partially sighted people were offered formal counselling at the time of diagnosis or later.

- Almost half of blind/partially sighted people feel 'moderately' or 'completely' cut off from people and things around them

- In the year after registering blind, less than a quarter of people say they were offered mobility training to help them get around independently

- Older people with sight loss are almost three times more likely to experience depression than those with good vision

I'm running the 3k event alongside Lisa to support her, as well as proving something to myself - anyone who knows me knows how unfit I am! I also want to assist the RNIB to help offer support, guidance and anything anyone, young or old, need, within their lives to help them. Obviously 3k isn't a lot, but it's something to support the person who means the most to me, and if I can raise any money it would be great. It's not a traditional 3k either, but if I can finish this, then I can start thinking about longer races.

Thank you.
