Story
Hello my name is Gordon Piedra,
I am taking part in a readathon for my school to raise money for Chance Uk which is a very important charity for me. I have done many charity events like raffles or discos but recently my friend introduced me to this website and I was very interested by it. In total I have read 9 books so far. Here are some of the reviews.
If nobody speaks of remarkable things - Jon Mcgregor
It is about a woman who relives a traumatic experiance in her adolescence. She goes through every home on her street describing the little 'remarkable things' of their lives. Meanwhile he also talks about the present. He is a pregnant woman who had a one night stand in Scotland. Suddenly she meets a man who has had a crush on her since this traumatic experiance. The book explores the little things that we take for granted and minute details which are alwats there but we don't notice.
Empire of the Sun - J.G. Ballard
The semi-autobiograhical book describes BAllard's childhood in Shanghai and the attack on japenese pearl harbour. Jim -our protagonist is- is interned into a Japanese prison camp where he will remain for the next 3 years. A wonderful coming of age book where Ballard describes the absolute caranage and devastation of the book.
Animal Farm - George Orwell
The extremely metaphorical book discovers the new dominant political party -Communism- on a very basic level. It describes how the animals overrun Farmer Jones and rename 'Manor Farm' to 'Animal Farm'. But soon the animals start adopting the human ways despite promising not to and eventually the pigs begin to...
Old man and the Sea - Ernest Hemmingway
A very poignant story about the life of a cuban fisherman who has the worst luck ever. He hasn't caught a fish in 84 days. But now approaches his lucky 85th and today he will go out early and catch a big fish. But as he catches this fish he does not realise the size of the fish and knows he is in for a ride. A sad and very clever piece of writing, Hemmingway hit the nail on the head.
The Moonstone - Wilkie Collins
Described as the first proper detective novel of the 19th century Collins describes the story of the precious moonstone and the bad luck it brings to its bearer. One day for her 18th birthday a girl receives a gift from her mysterious auntie and falls into a murder story.
Fatherland - Robert Harris
In 1965 20 years after Germany had won the war, the 75th birthday of the Fürher, Xavier discovers the dead body of an old MP. Soon he runs into a seris of murders and eventually discovers a conspiracy that might even link to Adolf himself!
The Day of the Triffids - John Wyndlam
I wake up in a hospital with my eyes bandaged up, all I can remember is everyone marvelling at the enormous green comet coming towards earth. That's when they began to take over. The only thing that separates us from them is vision, but now we are equal.
