Story

Greetings. Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are walking approximately 300 km from the Portuguese city of Porto to Santiago de Compostella in Spain, to mark my big birthday, and to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

Most of the time we walk because we are fit enough, we enjoy it, and we can take the time off to do it. Many people in the world are not so fortunate. Adults and children in Africa often walk long distances because they need help when ill; the nearest hospital/clinic is many miles away and they can not afford transport.

So, we are supporting Michelle Pickering, under the umbrella of the charity Homeopathy in Africa. Michelle has been working in Tanzania, Uganda and D.R of Congo, offering homeopathy at very low cost or free of charge, supporting families and children in villages and remote rural areas, and helping them with their health needs.100% of all funds raised will go to Michelle (promise).

It can be easy to forget just how fortunate we are, in having readily available healthcare within easy reach, and mostly free at point of delivery.  Sadly, many people in Africa don't enjoy the same benefits and many die as a result - often children.

Michelle is a homeopath who decided to leave her home in the USA and dedicate her time to helping people in need. She works with schools, community leaders and local healthcare professionals, providing homeopathic treatment to help those who do not have access to basic healthcare. Michelle has also started teaching the local people to use homeopathy, so that communities can continue with it once she decides to leave. She says that there is a lot of interest, and news travel fast. Many people start queuing at 6.00 a.m. to see Michelle and her helpers.  You can read more about Michelle's work on our blog

Can I challenge you to forfeit cake and coffee today? How much would that cost you?  £10 in Africa goes a long way - supporting a family of four with treatment for one month, or treating a whole school (950 children) for ringworm or scabies. Michelle has started planning on how to support young girls who have been victims of FGM - a topic that has been very much in the news recently over here.

This then is what we are walking for ~ If every one of you donates 5 pence per kilometer, we're sure to raise our target figure easily. Are we worth it? Please give what you can. Thank you.
