Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

JOB DONE!!! We started the ride at 2pm on Saturday 2nd July 2011. Thanks to Hertz for generously supplying a hire car to get us to the start line (and back at the end).. We rode in boiling sunshine along the Cornish Coast to St Ives where Kevin had a puncture!...

We cycled hard each day, averaging about 95miles a day. We had no support so carried all the gear we needed. By day 8 we reached Glenn Coe in the Scottish Highlands. What a stunning days cycling.. 112 miles from Alexandria (just above Glasgow) right over the mountains and down to east of fort William. We had pretty good luck with the weather, following the weather front which disrupted the golf at Inverness but never actually getting into it.

Finally reached John O Groats at 13.45hrs Tuesday 12th July.

We had no mechanical problems except Kevins early flatty and a few broken spokes due to Kevins exuberant hill climbing technique (big gear, standing on the pedals and engaging wharp drive).

We had no injuries or discomfort. It was an amazing journey.

Thankyou to everyone who has supported us and who has given so generously. I know that Mark Kenealy is very touched by the whole thing.

Please continue to give so we can reach our target of £3000.00..

THE COUNT DOWN HAS STARTED>> WE LEAVE ON SATURDAY 2nd JULY 2011 ON THIS EPIC CHALLENGE. PLEASE SUPPORT US..

My name is Graham Finney. I am a Police Officer with 26years service. I work on a small unit investigating organised crime.

I became friends with a colleague who also served on the team. He always had a great out look on life and worked really hard.. These are his words..

‘’I'm Mark Kenealy, a 49 year old regular family guy who was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in June 2008, I had a few toilet troubles prior to diagnosis that my GP recognised, sending me for specialist testing and diagnosis. The rollercoaster of life with cancer means constant treatments which have changed my life in so many ways. Three years on and Chemotherapy is hopefully doing its best to stop its progression.  It's a good thing for me to continue to raise awareness of the disease and I wonder how many people who read these few words are even aware of a PSA test or that Prostate Cancer is diagnosed 37,000 times a year in the UK. I am one of 250,000 living with the disease, incredible figures for such an unknown disease’’.

Mark is battling this horrible disease, but has sadly had to retire due to his declining health.

He is an absolute inspiration and has retained his wicked sense of humour and solid out look.

Despite his appalling illness Mark is dedicating as much of his time as possible to working with the Prostate Cancer Charity. His treatment is extremely harsh and leaves him exhausted for days. Despite this he remains extraordinarily cheerful and full of enthusiasm.

I decided to do some thing to raise awareness of the disease and the charity, as well as cash for Prostate Cancer. As a result I promised Mark that I would cycle 1000 miles from Lands End to John O Groats. I am doing it with a friend, Kevin Hanner..

Kevin Hanner... ‘I am currently employed as Operations Manager of City Reach Health Services, a primary health care provider for the homeless and other hard to reach groups across Norwich. With a history of working in frontline health services I can not speak highly enough of the work carried out by the prostate cancer charity and the highly valuable support they provide.

I previously cycled from JOG to LE in 2005, but am keen to see what it looks like going the other way and I am hoping that my daily commute up Grapes Hill will prepare me for the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. If it qualifies as a mountain stage in the Tour of Britain it is good enough for me’’.

We are doing the ride unsupported and in ten days. I am sure that it will be tough, but if this endeavour raises a few quid for research and support for the Prostate Cancer Charity, then it will easily be worth it.

Please support Kevin and me, and Mark.. you are an inspiration.
