12 hour swims, six swimming pools and 7 days… Greg and Rich take on Ocean’s 7 Challenge
On the 12 September, myself and Rich will commence swimming 12 hours a day for 7 consecutive days at six 1610 swimming pools, where he aims to swim the equivalent distance of the English Channel every day for 7 days; more than double what Michael Phelps (18 time Olympic Champion) would have done in his biggest training week (231km).
There has been a bit of background to the event having completing a 36 hour swim with Rich two years ago and raising £5,000. Rich has been high flying in the sprint swimming world, finishing last year ranked 2 in England in his favoured Masters event (one place above Greg) and will play a key role as a training partner. Greg will use Rich’s knowledge as a personal trainer to assist with his preparation and will, no doubt, be dragged along as he is joined during parts of the challenge.
The last challenge caused fainting, cramps, nearly 2 stone of weight loss (in the space of 36 hours), respiration strain and general fatigue that took over a month to clear and a shoulder injury that is still being managed two years on. To create a more severe challenge has not happened without some real thought.
I'm driven by a number of things. I enjoys fitness. I enjoys working with others and raising money, but a key message came out:“I’m an OK swimmer, not a great one. I qualified for the Masters World Championships in Russia this year, but I would have been going to make up the numbers, not threaten the medals. Being innovative around unique challenges means that I’m not benchmarked – I set the standard and stretch what people consider possible. These types of challenges are psychological ones. I’m yet to discover a ‘breaking point’, but I’m intrigued to know if this exists. These events become my Everest and aid my transition from being an OK swimmer, to a good one in my own right.”
I will be looking for a variety of support, particularly volunteers who can help with lap counting. 1610 are keen to work closely with me and find ways to get others involved and participating in their own challenges. We are keen to hear your own stories. You can donate through the link below. There will soon be another link showing some interesting blog articles, written by me that may give some ideas around your own training.
