Hadrian's Wall Weekend Trek · 7 September 2012

We are a registered charity dedicated to providing assistance dogs to help transform the lives of people with physical disabilities. Our dogs allow our clients to enjoy a greater independence and quality of life, and we strive to keep growing so that we can help more people across the UK.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am a volunteer Canine Partners Puppy Parent based in Bishop’s Stortford. Puppy Parents receive a puppy when it’s about 8 weeks old and teach him/her the basics of doggy behaviour – sit, stand, down, recalls, etc. plus some specific commands that they will need when they reach advanced training later in life. Puppy Parents will have the pups for around 12-14 months living with them 24/7 and attend Canine Partners training classes once a week. At around 14 to 18 months old the pups leave the Puppy Parent and go to Canine Partners training centre in Sussex for advanced training.

Sometimes these young pups can become unwell through diet or growth problems resulting in many visits to the vet. Some have allergies that mean they may have to have a special diet probably for the rest of their lives. Some may get joint problems and may need surgery, rehab and water therapy. Veterinary bills don’t come cheap and although insurance covers some of the cost it does not cover everything. I wanted to help with the extra costs when these situations arise in any dog under Canine Partners care. It costs £10,000 to get to the stage of matching the dog to an applicant so raising extra funds is vital.

I like to walk in the countryside and decided to do this weekend walk alongside Hadrian’s Wall when I saw it advertised on the Canine Partners website. I will walk 25 miles over the weekend come rain or shine spending two nights sleeping in a tent at a campsite near Haltwhistle (no comfy en-suite bedroom). It will be a challenge for me as I’m not much good at hill walking; it’s pretty flat around the Herts/Essex borders. I’m following a fitness plan with a local gym and getting out and about walking with my boots on and rucksack on my back.

Please consider making a donation to Canine Partners to support the work they do for people with disabilities and to make my trek worthwhile.

Thank you.
