Story
On August 15th 2017, identical twin girls, Pippa and Penny, were born, weighing 1lb 9oz and 2lb 2oz respectively. After a relatively straight forward 8 weeks on Neonatal units, the girls were discharged. They were home as a family of 5 for just 8 days before Pippa became ill. Her parents rushed her straight to A&E at Leeds General Infirmary, where she was immediately taken into resuscitation. After she was stabilised, she was admitted to the Neonatal unit because she was simply too small (now 3lb 9oz) to receive the appropriate care on any other ward.
Pippa had picked up 2 viruses, Cytomegalovirus and Enterovirus, they began attacking her body and she ended up with acute liver failure. The doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to save Pippa, from ventilation to physiotherapy, medication after medication after medication and what must be a record number of blood product transfusions. Pippa remained on the unit for 9 weeks, where the staff looked after her, and the family 24 hours a day. They formed close bonds with the staff and consider them our extended family. They are superhumans.
However, these superhumans need resources, and there is only so much they can get within the budgets they are set. We would love to raise enough money to get them some much needed equipment, whether its to support the babies or the families.
Pippa passed away on 30th December 2017, we'd like this to be her legacy.
Throughout the year we're having fundraising events and challenges to try and raise as much as we can.
On July 28th 2018 Gwyn will be walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks to raise money for the neonatal unit that looked after her (Sarah is part of the support team). We will be joined by approximately 40 friends. Please donate as much or as little as you can.
