Story
Thank you, beautiful people, for visiting my JustGiving page!
At the end of April (two days after submitting my long awaiting dissertation), I will be flying out to the Tamil Nadu region of India for 10 weeks with the charity Restless Development and the International Citizen Service (ICS). Restless Development brings together young volunteers to help fight poverty overseas. In the past 30 years, they have trained, inspired and helped more than 7 million children, young people and community members in Africa, South Asian and the UK.
Tamil Nadu experiences significant inequality amongst its population; households in the rural areas have limited access to running water, and few schools have appropriate toilet facilities. Youth unemployment is also an issue, with nearly half of respondents in a recent study saying they were looking for work. Underemployed young people struggle to develop skills, whilst highly qualified young people have a lack of training on approaching an interview or developing a CV. Girls and young women in the region also face challenges relating to their sexual rights and access to menstrual resources.
The scheme I am participating in is mostly government-funded. This means that the majority of the costs are already covered, I don't have to pay specifically for my flight, visas, vaccinations or accommodation. However, volunteers are expected to raise a minimum of £800 towards the programme .... which is where you lovely people come in!
I'm attempting to raise at least £800 for the charity through this JustGiving page before I leave for India. I will also be doing a few fundraising events over the next few weeks - so please keep a lookout & if you can afford it, please sponsor me by clicking the donate button.
Thank you for taking the time out to share/donate.
