Dear Friends, thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
Are you able to help us raise funds for outdoor play equipment to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Hilary Storm Nursery and Primary school in Kumi District, East Uganda? This is an area of much poverty where most families eke out a living through peasant farming, yet, after 10 years of existence, we still need outdoor play equipment for our nursery school children! The opportunity to climb, swing, slide and more is vital as it helps the coordination and development of motor, cognitive and other skills.
If you have friends and family who would like to help please share with them too.
It has been a source of continual joy to see the school develop into one of the best schools in the district and recognised by local leaders for its benefit to the local community.
Inspiration for the project originated with Stephen Okiror, a senior civil servant, who having gained from his education wanted to give something back to his local community. Stephen started business as a young boy buying and selling local eggs and dried cassava and growing tomatoes in order to support his schooling. He provides education that gives children the best chance to support themselves and their families. The local community also benefits from the employment opportunities generated by the school.
School fees are modest and the aim is to reduce them further through the development of projects that generate income and provide sustainability for the school's activities.
The children also learn through small projects and have opportunities at school to learn simple ways of business, for example, they run the school 'canteen' (tuck shop) and each class has a garden where vegetables are grown and sold locally.
There is a truck that generates income, also food crops (sweet potatoes, cassava, maize and ground nuts) and fruit (oranges and mangoes) are grown on school land.
