Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who we continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Story

After a lot of careful thought about who I would like to raise money for, I decided that it would be for Dementia UK. Watching my Grandfather deteriorate from Dementia over the years before he sadly passed away, was a very sad experience for our  family to go through. If you know anyone that has suffered from this terrible disease then you will know just how hard it is to watch that person close to you become less and less in control of their own life.

There is no cure for Dementia and by 2025, at least 1 million of us will be suffering from Dementia which is a huge number. Charities like Dementia do not operate without donations to keep supporting families with Admiral Nurses who visit those families affected.

I couldn't quite believe it when I got the ballot place to run in in my first marathon being The London Marathon. This is something I had only dreamt of doing. Last year I got to Marshal at mile 23 with my running club friends and it was such an amazing experience. It will be a very special time for me with it being my first Marathon. I will have my friends and family there to support me including my running club family; Reading Roadrunners.

To run a Marathon takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I wouldn't class myself as being a natural runner. I have to put a lot of time, effort and energy into training. I have incorporated some running events such as two half marathons and smaller runs into my training and thanks to my very supportive coach at my running club, I am following a training plan as well as working full time.

Every week I am increasing the miles but it hasn't helped with suffering from runners knee and taking two weeks out of my training schedule. I am now back to my running plan and updating my FB page with my weekly runs. It is nice to see just how much support I am getting from my marathon training.

Now this is where you come in, I am spending hours a week training which is tough in itself but if you could spare any money to support my Dementia UK then both the charity and myself would really appreciate it. I will keep updating my progress. Thank you very much.
