Harley was born on the 10th of October 2015. He was born with a condition called CDH. CDH effects babies in many different ways but generally it is in relation to the diaphragm not forming properly which can leave a gap between the chest cavity and the abdomen and unfortunately the rate of survival is usually only 50%. In Harley's case this has caused his stomach, bowel and part of his liver to come up into his chest which has pushed his heart over to the right side. This, in turn, means his lungs did not have much room to form.
When he was born he was immediately taken by doctors, paediatricians and surgeons to help get him onto a ventilator and get him stable. However he was more sick than we realised and was put onto a machine called ECMO, this saved our little Harley's life. He had his surgery on the 21st of October, which was his due date and since then has some ups and downs but is finally on the home stretch.
We have no idea how his parents managed to keep it all together throughout this journey, but we do know they couldn't have done it without the Ronald McDonald house. When Harley was 2 days old we were placed in the Ronald McDonald house and are still there now. Having a place to stay so close to Harley as well as allowing their 3 year old to stay with them, allowed them to keep strong and just focus on getting Harley better. If they didn't have this home, they would have had to split their family in two.
