Story
So this is it...... after 2 plus years of running around training for various races, improving my overall well being and fitness I have bit the bullet and finally decided to take on a Marathon.
My personal journey through running and finishing university has been so huge, I am healthier and happier than I have ever been. I want to share this joy by raising some serious cash for a fantastic cause which is so close to my heart!
Each and every day in my job as a paramedic I see suffering and pain, not always of a physical nature. My job isn't all guts gore and sirens. One of the most tragic state of disease we often encounter people in is one of the mind. Can you imagine waking up each day becoming gradually less and less aware of your surroundings, confused by simple words, unable to communicate your fear or needs, a stranger in your own body? Can you imagine being the individual caring for a family member you love so dearly who looks at you with blank eyes, shouts at you and hits you because they think your a burglar in their home? Unfortunately the answer to the last question is so commonly yes, Alzheimer's is becoming a more and more prevalent disease causing devastation not only to the individual but their loved ones.
The Alzheimer's society funds research into quality of life improvements and ultimately a cure for these peoples suffering. They teach people, health care professionals such as myself, how to best care for such a misunderstood and often overlooked group of people. But most importantly they provide support to anyone and everyone effected. This work can't continue without our help.
I am not by any stretch saying that everyone with Alzheimers is suffering, some people live and cope quite happily but lets not neglect this growing population! I can give these individuals an injection to make them feel better, assessment at hospital often causes more distress, oxygen won't reverse it. This is my way of doing my bit to help reduce suffering due too an impossible disease, please stand with me and help by donating as little or as much as you can
From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!
