Story

Welcome to my JustGiving page and foremost, thank-you for taking the time to read what I have to say.

As a university student in development studies, I find myself being constantly bombarded with the world's problems. Often these problems are so immense and so multi-faceted, they seem too big to begin to grapple with. Not only is this disheartening, but it also separates us (us being the so-called 'developed' world) further from the issues to which we are in fact often intimately linked.

If there is one thing I have learned from being at university, it is that in reality; nothing is linear. The solution to a problem in the world can rarely be answered in a single sentence. The time for a different approach to massive social agendas such as the eradication of poverty are long overdue. I hope that my generation is able to address the crises that face the globe with a fresh set of eyes and an open mind. Without both of these qualities, we so often overlook what is painfully obvious and shut out ideas that may seem too radical at the time but are simply a new and often intelligent approach.

It is this notion that has driven me to Uganda (figuratively). I think that the most eye-opening experiences in life are often the ones that force us to live outside what we would call 'normal.' As a volunteer for this project, I will be building and doing odd-jobs by day and sleeping on the ground of an old school house by night. This is vastly different from my normal, but it is perhaps the most exciting prospect I have ever had on my horizon.

The way I see it, £600 has the potential to make a notable impact on an entire community. It provides the tools necessary to build a functional school which they themselves will operate. I am looking at this not as an opportunitiy for me to teach them how to live like a 'first-world' citizen, but more as an opportunity for me to learn how to live like the member of a community. If the first-world in all its glory is missing one vital component, it is the philosophy of communalism and with it trust, reciprocity and respect. I truthfully see Uganda as the learning experience of a lifetime and your support would mean so much to me.
