Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) affects approx 10,000 people in the UK, majority are children, with no known cause or cure. The current treatment is non-specific and highly toxic, with many potentially life-threatening complications. NeST funds Bristol Children's Hospital in researching NS to find a cure.

Story

Having been diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome in March 2017, I have noticed that there isn't that much awareness about it, especially after I had to explain what it is to my GP.

It affects hundreds of children and adults all round the world and there currently isn't a cure. The only current treatments are high dose steroids, immunosuppressive drugs and water tablets, all with harsh side effects. It can cause kidney failure and although most transplants are successful, its common for the disease to return in the new kidney, which is why finding a cure is so important.

I decided to do an army assault course with a team of nine close friends and family to raise as much money as I can for an important charity.

Heres what your money could help with:

  • £10 - they can keep kidney cells healthy in a lab for a month
  • £50 - they can sequence a patients DNA to discover rare mutations
  • £100 - they can profile a patients blood proteins using sophisticated electrospray technology
