On 7 July at midday, I am planning to abseil from Bath Abbey’s tower as a fundraiser for two projects dear to my heart (and, perhaps, to yours!)  There are 212 steep steps to the top of the tower, a daring climb over the windy parapet 49 metres up, and then - abseiling down! I have never done anything like this before, ever.  I have fundraised for Genesis Trust for some years by running the Bath Half Marathon (you may have supported me in the past), but my right knee hurts now when I run, so I don't want to do Half Marathons any more.  But jumping off the abbey's tower ... now that *is* a challenge! 

Genesis Trust supports vulnerable people in the city of Bath.  There are a number of projects that sit under the "Genesis umbrella" - and one of them is Street Pastors.  I have been a Street Pastor in Bath since that project started here about 10 years ago.  We're out on the streets on Friday and Saturday nights, listening, helping and caring for visitors and residents; homeless and those too drunk to get home without help; the lost, the lonely and the searchers.  Other Genesis projects offer immediate practical help to people who are hungry, homeless and  vulnerable, and provide long-term opportunities for them to rebuild their lives.  Genesis is about to move into new premises which will be fitted out in a way that will better help those it serves.

In addition, I attend Bath Abbey on Sunday evenings and am privileged to be part of the music group there.  The Abbey is embarking on a major re-fit of its facilities so that it can better serve all the public in Bath, whether locals or visitors, congregations or schools.  The Footprint project is an exciting update so that the abbey is an even better venue for so much that it contributes to the city.  The Abbey’s collapsing floor will be repaired, and an eco-friendly heating system, powered by Bath’s natural hot springs, will be installed. The Abbey will be more hospitable for its visitors – improving the facilities and expanding its capacity by 200 square meters.

So the two beneficiaries of my sponsored abseil are two places dear to my heart.  Please help me in this venture.
