Story

Dear Team HSO, HSOBC, and Friends,

I hope this finds you and your family well.

HSOBC Challenge - Saturday 13th June 2020

The events of the recent weeks pertaining to the black lives matter movement both in the UK and across the world have powerfully impacted so many of us and it has been fantastic to see so many of our rowers inspired to take positive action by these events. The black lives matter movement has formed part of our discussions in our rowing briefings with the senior and J16 age group athletes these past two weeks and for our 12th Saturday challenge, very much led by our amazing senior and J16 rowers, HSOBC will be supporting and raising awareness for the excellent educational charity Show Racism the Red Card.

The seniors and J16 rowers have discussed plans for the challenge this weekend and have come up with four different options  for individuals and families to take part in.

- Rowing on the ergo for 8 minutes 46 seconds aiming for max distance. This could also be a family relay challenge

- Running or walking for 8.46km, this could also be a combined family relay or team total as well as an individual effort.

- An 8 minute and 46 second Circuit

2 rounds
8 exercises 30 seconds each
1 exercise 46 seconds

Squats (30s)
Press-ups (30s) - or kneeling version
Crunches (30s)
Left lunge (30s)
Right lunge (30s)
V sit (30s)
Hip thrusters (30s)
Plank (30s)

Short break and repeat

Jumping squats (46s) to finish off

It would be great if everyone who is participating and has completed a challenge would post on social media to share the just giving page, reaching out to family and friends to donate or take part in a challenge if they can.

Current government rules allow us to head outside for the purposes of exercise multiple times per day but please can I remind everyone that we should only be doing so with members of our own household or in groups of no more than 6 with those outside of your household while maintaining 2 meter social distancing outdoors. Please ensure that you follow government rules when undertaking this challenge or any other outdoor exercise.

We talk a lot with our rowers about our set of values as a team and a central part of these are respect and mutual support; by supporting this important cause the girls are affirming these values and aiming to make a positive impact on our wider community. If you are able to do so please take part in the challenge over the weekend and/or support our rowers' fundraising initiative.

As has been phenomenally demonstrated over recent weeks and months, HSOBC is an amazing community to be part of and I am proud that our rowers are so passionate in supporting this cause. Black lives matter.
