We are the Heart Charity for Wales to Heart screenings and defibrillators

Story

This fundraiser is in memory of Paul O'Dwyer; a much loved family member and friend to many. Paul tragically died on October 30th 2021 whilst attempting to save lives of paddleboarding friends on the River Cleddau.

A week prior, Paul and two friends had completed a 100 mile paddle of the River Wye in 24 hours, raising money for CALON HEARTS, Heart Screening to come to Port Talbot, his local community. Over £6000 was raised.

In July 2022, the money was used towards a Heart Screening day for 60 (aged under 40) people. The event was hugely successful and led to three people being referred for further tests, which demonstrates the importance of such screening.

Heart screening detects heart abnormalities early, meaning treatments can be given and interventions made in people whose heart abnormalities would have otherwise gone undetected. Early diagnosis means potential lives saved. We all sadly know someone who has been taken too early due to having a heart problem that potentially could have been picked up if they were screened. Paul's goal was to offer screening to the community and save lives.

In October 2022, Paul's Father, John O'Dwyer and friends will be completing the walk Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain. This is known in English as the Way of St James. It is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried.

Some of Paul's ashes will be scattered also during this walk.

This walk will be completed over a number of days and is considered a tough route due to many steep ascents and descents.

Please please please support John and friends in this epic challenge to raise the much needed funds to host another screening day, but for people aged 40+.

This will need to take place in Cardiff due to additional tests for each person but this will potentially save lives.

Also if anyone wishes to join the walk, you are more than welcome. Please contact us for further information.

PLEASE SHARE THIS LINK FAR AND WIDE. IF ANYONE WISHES TO UNDERTAKE THEIR OWN PERSONAL CHALLENGE FOR THIS GREAT CAUSE, PLEASE KEEP SHARING THE LINK. ANY MONEY RECIEVED OVER THE TARGET CAN BE USED TOWARDS ADDITIONAL SCREENING DAYS.

Remember, early detection can prevent fatal outcomes!

**Don't forget to add the gift aid** Thank you all ❤️❤️❤️
