Wally Carter (Died December 13th 2019) was a well known local ex PE teacher and ex sportsman in Cardiff. Not only that, he was loving family man who had simple tastes but loved life. He also had a wicked sense of humour. He personally played cricket up to county seconds level, first class rugby and soccer as well. He had a positive impact on thousands of former pupils’ and colleagues’ lives and to get a diagnosis of MND In early 2018 was unimaginably difficult for a man who had remained fit and active after retirement. He never smoked, ate healthily and enjoyed a little alcohol and until 2017 was walking 10 miles a day on a regular basis.
MND is a cruel degenerative illness. Wally never gave up hope that he could restart each function that was gradually being taken away from him. There are currently about 5000 sufferers in the UK and Cardiff and the Vale are above the national average. There is a 1 in 300 chance of getting it in your lifetime. There is no cure and only palliative treatments.
Any contribution, however small, will help future generations combat this disease if a cure can be found.
