Story
I sat in the stadium for the opening ceremony, held the Paralympic torch, saw Ellie Simmonds win Gold in the pool, David Weir race in the stadium, met Sarah Storey, and cheered on Oscar Pistorius as he won gold in the 400m. The Paralympic Games inspired me, and I promised to do something as a result to keep the Paralympic spirit alive. So here goes… I’ve committed to running the London Marathon on 21st April, and to raising at least £2013 for Disability Sport.
There are around 11 million disabled people in the UK. Less than two in ten in England are taking part in sport. The English Federation of Disability Sport is the national charity dedicated to disabled people in sport throughout England. They work to improve and increase the opportunities offered, ensuring disabled people have memorable sporting experiences.
Have I run the London marathon before? Yes, but a long time ago... the first time as a result of a promise made in the pub, and the last time I swore never to do it again as I was escorted to the medical tent after crossing the finish line.
Am I physically prepared for it? No... but I'm getting there. This is the first time I've done any serious exercise since having kids, so the first time I have exercised in four years. I started training on 2nd January and am gradually building my general fitness and running distance. I've completed two 10k training races so far, and have two 20k races and a 16 mile race to work on before the marathon itself.
If you are able to, please donate and help Disability Sport offer more opportunities for disabled people, to keep the Paralympic spirit alive, and to keep me motivated as I pound the streets in the freezing cold.
Thank you for your support.
