Helen and Bill's Beaconsfield Memory Walk page

Beaconsfield Memory Walk · 14 September 2015
Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page.
As you can see, this year we are rather less organised than usual as we have already completed the 5km walk at a Beaconsfield (where we walked in the rain three years ago) and we are pleased to say it was a lovely sunny autumn morning for a change! Our excuse for asking for sponsorship retrospectively is, as some of you know, Katherine and Dan got married on 3rd September, so we were a bit preoccupied. If you are on face book this is the link which takes you to the photographers page, then click on Dan and Kat album:

It was a roller coaster emotional day in a fairy tale setting enjoyed by all who attended. There is a fabulous picture of Bill walking Katherine down the aisle, and I think you'll agree they both scrubbed up well!! We let Katherine off the walk under the circumstances but hope she'll join us next year.
As I think most of you know, Bill is now in the early to mid stages of mixed dementia (vascular and alzheimers) diagnosed several years ago. We also have several close family members who had dementia in the later stages of their lives and friends with relatives in a similar position. Sadly, Tony, my brother-in-law, passed away earlier this year. In fact there are very few people who do not know someone who is or has been affected by dementia. Dementia is often associated with old age but people as young as thirty or forty and even younger can also be affected. In some ways, we are lucky that Bill was diagnosed early (early onset is anyone diagnosed under the age of sixty) and he has been on medication for some time now. Often it is undetected until it is in the later stages when medication can be less effective. The Alzheimer's Society have local support networks which include Carer Support Groups, Dementia Support Workers, Dementia Cafes, befriending scheme and Singing for the Brain. Fundraising helps pay for this valuable work as well as helping research to find a cure for the future. Bill particularly enjoys the weekly sessions of singing for the brain and monthly movement for the mind - I never knew you could do so many strenuous exercises sitting down! I find I still learn something new and useful at each carers support group meeting as well as pass on tips I have learned to others, so we would really appreciate it if you can sponsor us for the walk albeit retrospectively to help the all good work and research to continue.
Last year we had a fantastic response so please support us and donate now even though the walk took place on Sunday, 6th September 2015. Don't forget to Gift Aid if you can please. Thank you!
